Types of Phonetics
Articulatory Phonetics
Articulatory phonetics studies how speech sounds are physically produced by the movement of the speech organs, such as the tongue, lips, teeth, and vocal cords. It explains the place and manner of articulation, showing exactly how different sounds are formed in the vocal tract.
Acoustic Phonetics
Acoustic phonetics analyzes the physical properties of speech sounds as sound waves. It focuses on frequency, duration, intensity, and the visual representation of sounds through spectrograms. In other words, it examines how sounds travel through the air from the speaker to the listener.
Auditory Phonetics
Auditory phonetics studies how speech sounds are perceived and processed by the human ear and brain. It focuses on the listener’s ability to recognize, differentiate, and interpret sounds in spoken language.
